There are two types of high blood pressure caused by different things.
Primary Hypertension which accounts for approximately 90% of all newly diagnosed cases. There is no apparent cause of the blood pressure increase but the prevalence increases with age since arterial pressure tends to increase with age. The main factors that are associated with the development of hypertension include a strong family history, race, sex, excessive salt intake, age, diabetes, smoking, obesity, stress, excessive alcohol use, oral contraceptives.
Secondary Hypertension in the the other 10% of hypertensive patients. The hypertension is caused by a pre-existing illness and these patients generally show signs of the disease. Causes could be chronic kidney disease.

High blood pressure classically is caused by the build up of crap in your blood distribution net work. Narrowing the pipes like rust on a water pipe restricts the passage of fluid.

Most high blood pressure about 98% is said to be idiopathic or essential. This means cause unknown. However it is is probably a combination of lifestyle issues which accumulate over many years, notably obesity and salt intake. A couple of rare conditions such as renal artery stenosis and pheochromocytoma, ( an adrenal tumour ), are amoung identifiable causes.
