If only it were that simple…
You could try lifestyle changes first, so lose weight if you are overweight, stop smoking, limit alcohol consumption, reduce the amount of salt you eat and exercise. Sometimes this is enough to reduce BP to a satisfactory level, if not, and your BP is within treatment range, anti-hypertensive medicines are the only other option. Poorly controlled hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease.
It’s always worth having secondary causes (e.g., hormone or kidney problems) excluded too.
Caveat: In case "thenoseknows" comes along and tells you to take some weird naturopathic crap or recommends magic water aka homoeopathy, ignore her/him/it. He/she/it isn’t a medical professional and has no idea what he is talking about. As I said before, poorly controlled hypertention can cause serious problems and AltMed has nothing to offer.

When the arteries become obstructed with plaque and cholesterol, they harden and constrict, the circulation of the blood through the vessels becomes difficult, forcing the blood through narrower passages. As a result, blood pressure becomes elevated.
It is important to eliminate the reason for high blood pressure and not just treat the symptoms. High blood pressure can be caused through:
•Hypertension: caused through smoking, stress, obesity, excessive use of stimulants such as coffee or tea, drug abuse and the use of contraceptives.
•High blood pressure can also be of emotional origin: stress, worries, fears, pressures or prolonged nervous stress.
•A diet that consists of a lot of junk food
•A fibreless diet and foods that are high in animal fat and animal cholesterol.
Foods that help lower blood pressure:
•Whole food calcium: broccoli, bok choy, raw milk, kale, beans, white cheese, tofu and soybeans, flaxseed and flaxseed oil.
•Garlic: significantly lowers blood pressure (whole garlic not supplements)
•Foods high in magnesium: spinach, avocados, organic chocolate, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, brazil nuts, buckwheat, almonds and barley.
•Omega-3 fatty acids: almonds, walnuts and pecans.
•Foods high in potassium: Beetroot, apricots, pomegranates, oranges, water chestnuts, tomatoes, potatoes, cantaloupe, bananas, figs, avocados, yogurt, broccoli and brussel sprouts.
•Vitamin C: red cabbage, red peppers, tangerines, mandarins, oranges, kiwi fruit, strawberries and potatoes.

A very quick and effective way to reduce high blood pressure and protect your entire body from the effects of inflammation is to take a natural product called Immunocal. It is totally safe and I have recommended it to many people with blood pressure problems, and they usually see immediate results. It is made from cysteine which enables the body to make glutathione inside the cell. Glutathione is critical to cellular health and regulates the oxidant/antioxidant balance in the body. Take 1-2 cloves of garlic first thing in the morning. If you can’t eat, swallow with water, but then do it twice a day. Garlic reduces spasms of the small arteries besides bringing down the pulse rate and modifying the heart rhythm. It also relieves the symptoms of dizziness, numbness and breathlessness.
A healthy, well-balanced, low fat diet is extremely important for hypertension patients. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a must ( garlic should be included ) as the potassium present in them counters the effect of salt taken which in turn is a blood pressure increasing agent. Kidney patients, though, should keep a watch over their potassium intake. This diet of fruits and vegetables will also provide you with anti-oxidants, so very important for your general well being. This diet gets rid of the toxins in the body as well.
Brisk walking (not jogging) is the best medicine for hypertensive patients, especially older people.
There are a number of herbal and homeopathic remedies that are well known for their ability to control high blood pressure with great success. Unlike conventional medicines, which do not always address the root cause, natural remedies can do this without the risk of side effects or addiction.
In keeping with a holistic approach to health, Naturopaths recognize that high blood pressure may be a sign or symptom of imbalance in the body and thus recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and natural remedies to remove the causes of the high blood pressure, rather than simply just treating the symptoms.
Remember to always source your natural remedies from a reputable company in order to ensure safety, efficacy, and correct therapeutic dosage.
Note: Do not make changes to your prescription medication without first consulting your doctor.
