This is one that I get all the time in my practice. Thus far, most all answers you’ve received are RISK FACTORS for high blood pressure — not CAUSES.

The truth is, that High Blood Pressure (HBP) is IDIOPATHIC — or…we don’t know WHY some people get it and others won’t. Yes…poor lifestyle habits and bad eating decisions can put people at RISK for HBP, but the true CAUSE (a reactionary process) is still unknown. Like I explain to my patients…"You could take 100 people JUST LIKE YOU, and some will have ideal pressure, some with moderate pressure, and some with high pressure."

Likewise, this is why we have many different categories of blood pressure medications that all work on a different mechanism for controlling it in people with hypertension. There’s no absolute perfect drug, so sometimes we end up having to use a combination of 2 or more (in more severe cases).

Hope this helps.
