Tracing The Many Causes Of Headache

In order to treat any type of headache, experts advise that you must know the possible causes first. Studies show that all types of headaches are usually chemical, emotional, or structural related problems.

1. Dental problems. One of the most common reasons of headaches is dental problem. Findings prove that if the teeth of a person’s upper and lower jaw fail to meet properly, this can result to muscle tension that leads to headache.

Another dental-related cause of headache is the grinding or clenching of the teeth at night or “bruxism.” Because of the strain caused by heavy chewing or grinding, certain bones and muscles in the jaw are greatly stimulated that triggers headache.

What you can do is to increase your calcium and magnesium intake or use a plastic mouthpiece to reduce clenching and grinding. Aside from bruxism, another headache-related dental problem is known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-a cycle of pain, muscle spasms, and joint imbalance that involves the jaw and the skull and results to interruption of bones, cartilage and muscle activity. You can ask your dentist to evaluate this situation and recommend treatment options to solve the problem.

2. Chemical sensitivities. Chemicals found in different gadgets such as computers are one of the major triggers of headaches such as migraine.

Caffeine that is usually found in sodas, coffee, tea, chocolate, and some over the counter painkillers can also cause headaches. Try to eliminate all the sources of caffeine from your diet.

3. Magnesium deficiency. If a person suffers from magnesium deficiency, he/she may likely suffer from headaches compared to those who are not.

In order to maintain enough magnesium supply, avoid too much mental stress, drinking lots of coffee, eating sugary foods, a high sodium, carbohydrate and calcium diet, alcohol intake, drinking sodas, cigarette smoking, diuretics, and taking in drugs of all types.

4. Infections and bacterial disease. Infections in the different areas of the body such as the nose, throat, and ear can cause major headache.

Characterized by fever, nausea, muscle aches, chills, and diarrhea, Bacterial disease such as ehrlichiosis can be a major cause of headache. Make sure that you visit your physician to get proper treatment.

5. Muscle tension caused by stress and anxiety. Tensioned muscles usually cause headaches. What you can do is to veer away from things that can cause you stress and anxiety in order to avoid recurrent muscle tension.

6. Musculoskeletal system problems. Misalignments of a person’s spine and neck can greatly affect his/her poor posture and muscle tension that lead to headache. Try chiropractic, osteopathy, and physiotherapy treatments to solve this problem.

7. Eye problems. Various eye problems greatly contribute to headache. Visit your optometrist or ophthalmologist is your eyes need glasses or contact lenses already.

8. Lack of sleep and bad sleeping habits. Without enough sleep, your body is always tired. Muscle tension can build up which leads to headaches. Try to get enough hours of sleep and make sure that you eliminate bad sleeping habits such as using too many pillow or pulling a blanket over your to avoid having a headache.

9. Menstruation. Fluctuations of female’s hormone levels can also cause a great deal of headache. You can ask your doctor for helpful vitamins and supplements to solve this cause.

10. Neurological problems. Although it is a rare cause of headache, ask neurologists to examine you for possible brain tumors.

By conducting a series of tests such as CT or MRI, you can trace the possible cause of your recurrent headache.
Other causes include migraine, sinusitis, fevers, glaucoma, and neuralgia. Other serious causes of headache may include meningitis, sub-arachnoid haemorrhage, stroke, blood pressure, brain tumor, and temporal arteritis.

Any ideas on causes of constant headaches?
I have been having headaches for around 2years now, worsening in pain and length. I have had a brain scan last june and it was clear. The headaches are located at the front of my skull, above my temples and accross my forehead and can vary in length from 30minutes to hours at a time.

Painkillers have no effect and i have been treated for sinusitis and taken migraine drugs such as dicloflex and zomigtriptan which resulted in my body going into a fit.

The front of my forehead always feels tense even as i relax in the bath or lying down and the only way i can make them stop is to go to sleep which is often difficult.

I have seen several GPs and specialists in neurology and none have been able to trace the cause. I also went to the opticians and my sight is apparently fine.

So I am looking for anyoe who has experienced similar symptoms or can offer ideas of what the cause could be and how to stop ths or at least ease it as its driving me up the walls having them every day!!!!

Maybe you need glasses or you have sensitivity to light. Get more relaxation throughout the day and get more sleep. Drink a lot of water, too.

Allergies along with an inner ear infection can do things like this.

I haven’t had a headache for two yrs, but I do get them often. Call me crazy, but I seek chiropractic care for my headaches. There is usually an imbalance in my neck of lower back that causes my headaches. The more often my headaches happen, I know that I just need an adjustment! Give it a try, It works for me!

Drink plenty of bottle water ie at least 5 litres per maybe more. this will help. Reduce sugary drinks including alcohol if these applies. Use a bit maybe a pinch of sea salt in your lityre of water.

Are you drinking enough water?. Avoid tea and coffee, but good old water. You may be dehydrated.

still sounds like sinus pain to me. I had em straight thru for years. Finally went to a sinus center, had pics taken of my sinuses and found them blocled with polyps. Had surgery last year, and bingo, no more frontal headaches. Also, try "ocean spray" brand saline spray in your nose, it’s harmless, over the counter, and works to help prevent sinus problems.

Sounds like muscle imbalances due too injuries or uneven muscle development. I’ve had head aches for many years due to injuries. There is a solution but it takes effort
Number of injuries + severity of injury + elapsed time – effort =fix if you have a large backlog it will also take a long time.

I figured it out when I was 100% trashed so I’m still working on the backlog.

Perhaps the head scans didn’t catch it because its sinuses.
People experience sinus headaches different ways, if you have a fungus in your sinus cavity it could cause pressure headaches that have nothing to do with your brain.

It could very possibly be tension headaches. I suffered with them literally all my life- I’ve tried OTC pain relievers, presription- nothing worked. I would wake up with a headache and have it all day long- even bending over to pick something up would trigger them.

I was going to try acupuncture when my (now) chiropractor offered to start adjustments in my neck, and the results, honestly, are tremendous. My neck being out of alignment (my whole life) was causing the muscles in my neck to tense up, which triggered my headaches (tension headaches begin in the neck). Now I can feel them coming on when my neck hurts, before I even feel pain in my head. At first I was going around 2x a week, then 1x a week, to 2-3x a month, and now I go about every month 1/2 (I’ve been going since late last year). It’s a great alternative to taking medicine (years of advil completely tore my stomach up), so I would recommend possibly trying a chiropractor. I truly hope you can find the solution that helps you- headaches are a horrible thing to live with. Take care.

to some people it may seem far fetched but try acupuncture if you havent already and listening to light classical at a super low volume, also try sitting in a darker room, I have found brighter lights make it worse for some reason, good luck and take care, also try some vitamin supplements, ask your gnc what they would recommend

try to get on a prophylactic med. i’ve been on a lot of different daily meds to prevent headaches-i’ve been getting migraines for 17 years now and have been on every thing under the sun for them, but if you feel better when you can destress and sleep, my suggestions are: prophylactic meds, anti-anxiety/muscle relaxer, and Botox.

If you want to go the non-drug route, try yoga, acupuncture, hypnotherapy and chiropractic treatment. (none ever gave me lasting results)

Botox works great for that feeling of muscle tightness in your head…it paralyzes the muscles (not to the point of dysfunction) and makes it harder for them to constrict as tightly. I’m getting my next set of shots on monday!

I would demand to see the top consultant for Neuroscience.

I was diagnosed with a cerebral aneurysm 12 years ago and a week before it was discovered I had constant headaches that were so bad it felt like my head was in a vice.

I’m not saying you’ve got this but I would seriously seek a second, third, fourth opinion. Very good luck indeed!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds just like a typical stress headache.
If you have tried the medical model route, you might consider alternative medicine.
Always go on a persons recommendation and check out practitioners qualifications.
Many G.P.’s can recommend someone.
Hope you find a "cure"

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, sweet fruits, milk, rice and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves’ juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
