Meditation is the best remedy, the best &#8220;medicine&#8221; for high blood pressure and heart disease, and I haven&#8217;t missed a day in the last 37 years.</p>
<p>Why is meditation so effective against one of the biggest health problems of today? Meditation de-stresses a person. Stress is one of the biggest causes of hypertension, and it is a part of everyday life that everyone has to face.</p>
<p>Our ancestors, the proto-human beings who lived thousands of years ago, mainly had physical challenges to deal with. If they saw a large predator, then danger messages were sent to their brains, and then more messages went to the rest of their bodies. Their bodies were made ready to either fight or flee.</p>
<p>Scientists call this a &#8220;fight or flight&#8221; reflex. The heart starts beating faster, the blood pressure increases, hormones are secreted. It is a useful reaction when you have to deal with a saber-tooth tiger, but what about when you face your boss at work?</p>
<p>When we are upset by someone at work or in society, danger signals are also sent to our brain and our heart starts beating faster and our blood pressure rises. You sit quietly and follow instructions that will help you to forget the world around you and focus on an inner peace that is inside of you. When you become adept at this technique it relieves stress and is just as effective as going away to the top of a forested mountain or sitting alone on a sandy beach.</p>
<p>Meditation also helps you to slow down your breathing. Our mind is directly related to our breathing. When we are agitated or in distress we will take short quick breaths. When we are relaxed or concentrated then our breathing slows down and becomes deeper as well. Proper meditation helps to calm the mind and slow down the breathing. This combination of sense withdrawal and slow, deep breathing works wonders. Try and it one day you too will impress your physician with a healthy blood pressure reading.</p>

<p>Eating celery regularly can control high blood pressure without the use of drugs according to China&#8217;s Hunan Hemotological Research Center.</p>
<p>Celery contains a naturally occurring chemical called &#8220;apigenin&#8221; which has been shown to dilate the blood vessels and contribute to preventing high blood pressure. Celery also contains very small amounts of a chemical in called 3-n-butylphtalide (3nb) which lowers blood pressure by relaxing the smooth muscles that line the blood vessels. 3nb also lowers the level of stress hormones called catacholamines.</p>
<p>In the Middle East patients have routinely been given half a pound of celery a day to control hypertension. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, animals fed celery extracts had blood pressure readings 14 percent lower than those animals who did not receive the extracts. The animals were given the equivalent of 2 stalks daily. Systolic blood pressure readings went down an average of 15 points.</p>
<p>Compared to other vegetables celery has a nigh natural sodium content so it can satisfy the craving for salt on low-salt diets. It also has a high potassium value. This makes it excellent for people who are taking hypertensive medications. Celery contains 341 milligrams potassium and 125 milligrams sodium per 100 gram serving. Any food with a ratio of at least three parts potassium to one part sodium is good for people with high blood pressure. In the body, the ratio between potassium and sodium is more than two to one. Most prepared foods, including cooked vegetables, reduce the ratio more than tenfold.</p>
<p>When the diet is high in salt sodium is retained in the cells with a large amount of water. An abundant amount of potassium is necessary to displace the accumulated sodium in the cells. If potassium is not present, the tissue cells retain water with the sodium. For this reason doctors prescribe diuretics, commonly called &#8220;water pills&#8221; in order to remove the water. When diuretics are taken to lower the blood pressure, they work by removing sodium from the body. But when sodium is removed, potassium is also removed. For this reason potassium supplements are usually prescribed in conjunction with the hypertension drug.</p>
<p>Celery contains a natural diuretic substance and has been used traditionally in treating obesity because it tends to eliminate water weight. But the balance between sodium and potassium is not unbalanced as it is when synthetic drugs are taken.</p>
<p>For people who have blood pressure which is only mildly or moderately high, the eating of celery may be all that is needed to lower it to normal levels. But even for those who have extremely high blood pressure readings, celery can be helpful. Celery is an excellent diuretic that can improve the effectiveness of high blood pressure medication, meaning that the dosage of medication may be reduced.</p>

<p>High blood pressure (hypertension) is a chronic illness in which your blood pressure readings are constantly 140/90 and above. In the majority of cases, people with high blood pressure must look forward to managing the disease for the duration. There are no known cures for the disease. However, it is widely accepted that dietary choices can play a major role in managing and even lowering your blood pressure</p>
<p>The Salt (Sodium Chloride) Effect</p>
<p>One of the major threats against maintaining a normal blood pressure is very prominent in our kitchen cupboard and most of the foods we eat &#8211; salt (sodium chloride). Your kidneys are the main organs for removing waste fluids from your blood. Through the process of osmosis, using a precise balance of potassium and sodium, fluids are drawn through a wall of cells and deposited in the bladder for excretion. Digesting too much salt adversely affects this balance which results in your body retaining too much fluid. This affects the kidney&#8217;s filtering ability, leading to toxic buildup (kidney disease) while at the same time increasing pressure on the blood vessels. The natural response by the body to this increase in pressure is to strengthen the walls of the arteries. It is strongly suggested that persons with hypertension eat lots of fruits and vegetables &#8211; food sources which are rich in potassium and other health enhancing vitamins, minerals and fibres. A diet containing at least five portions/80 grams of fruits and vegetables per day can substantially reduce your blood pressure. All meats, fresh fruits and vegetables are good sources of potassium. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, a diet plan rich in fruits, vegetables, and low or non-fat dairy, comes highly recommended for anyone suffering with hypertension.</p>
<p>Sodium in and of itself is not a danger, in fact it is essential for good health, the danger lies in too much. <p> According to statistics, one out of every three adult Americans have high blood pressure. Blood pressure is defined as the amount of force that the blood uses on the veins and arteries as it circulates through the body. A healthy person&#8217;s blood pressure should be around 120/80 mm Hg or even lower. Blood pressure that consistently measures 140/90 mm Hg or higher is considered high blood pressure. </p>
<p> If left uncontrolled, it may increase the risk of serious health problems including heart attack, kidney failure or stroke.</p>
<p> There are two types of high blood pressure: First, there is primary high blood pressure in which there is no known underlying cause and second, there is secondary high blood pressure which occurs as the result of a medical condition or as a side effect from medications. </p>
<p> What makes high blood pressure so dangerous is that most people do not experience any symptoms, even when blood pressure readings are dangerously high. This is why it is called the &#8220;silent killer.&#8221; However, some people may notice one or two of the following symptoms if their levels are consistently raised: headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, increased nosebleeds.</p>
<p> What Causes High Blood Pressure? </p>
<p> For most people, the cause remains unknown, making primary blood pressure the more prevalent of the two. While it is not entirely known why primary high blood pressure occurs, research is ongoing and a number of factors have been implicated. Since high blood pressure often runs in families, a strong genetic component has been indicated. </p>

<p>High blood pressure may seem like a minor inconvenience, but we shouldn&#8217;t downplay its dangers. It is directly or indirectly responsible for about 35,000 deaths in North America every year. About four million Canadians suffer from high blood pressure at varying degrees. The problem with high blood pressure, or hypertension, is that major warning signs may not appear until the disorder is advanced. </p>
<p> Physicians use a device called a sphygmomanometer to determine whether the blood pressure is high, low or normal. Two numbers are superimposed with the highest on top-120/80. The larger number gives the pressure when the heart beats, the systolic pressure; the smaller number gives the pressure when the heart is at rest, the diastolic pressure. The average blood pressure range is about 120/80 for men and is slightly lower for women. </p>
<p> Early visible signs of hypertension include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, insomnia and nervousness. Frequent temporary increases in blood pressure may also be an indicator. Later symptoms can include myocardial infarction, senility, brain haemorrhage and paralysis. If none of these visible signs is present, the only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have it monitored regularly. </p>
<p> An increase in the thickness of blood is one of the many reasons for high blood pressure. It is also caused by:</p>
<p> An increase in peripheral resistance-the blood vessels are narrower.</p>
<p> A decrease in blood vessel elasticity-they&#8217;re not as flexible as they should be.</p>
<p> A vasoconstriction (narrowing of the arteries) generally caused by plaque on the artery wall.</p>

<p> Adopt a diet that is high in plant-based foods. Legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains will supply abundant amounts of roughage and protective phytonutrients, many of which are involved in controlling cholesterol or dilating arteries. Should animal-based foods be consumed, these should be low in fat and organically/humanely raised whenever possible. Eggs are also a good source of both proteins and lecithin&#8217;s. </p>
<p> It is important to consume one or two tablespoons of cold-pressed vegetable oils daily. Ideally, these should give you both the omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as oleic acid. Flax seed oil is an excellent choice and there are now oil blends that provide a combination of these good fats. Of course, avoid fried, saturated and hydrogenated fats as much as possible.</p>
<p> If you want to spread something on your food, blend one part butter with one part cold-pressed oil, such as olive or flax seed oil. This mixture will stay soft, even in the fridge. Do not heat this butter/oil blend and keep it refrigerated. </p>

And since most people with hypertension have somewhat &#8220;thicker&#8221; blood, vitamin E&#8217;s blood-thinning effect should help. Start with 100&#8211;200 international units (IU) daily for two or three weeks. Then increase to 400 IU daily. Some people may need more as recommended by their health professional. </p>
<p> Exercise also helps reduce blood pressure by improving the heart&#8217;s ability to pump blood and reducing blood lipids. Exercise should be undertaken gradually, taking your present level of health into consideration. <p>When my friend Brad told my about his anxiety and high blood pressure symptoms I told him to visit his doctor. While I am suffering from high blood pressure since years and know some about it, I am not the person to ask for advice. So Brad went to the doctor and here is what he said.</p>
<p> Brad is not too old yet, just 31 but he is obese. He weighs 290 lbs and is only 5&#8217;09. He has various symptoms which make him nervous. He is afraid of having too high blood pressure and clogged arteries. He recently went on diet to loose some weight but the symptoms got even worse.</p>
<p> Twice a day he has periods of shallow breathing that take some hours and is noisy. He also feels some pressure on his chest followed by tingling in his face and arms. He is doing fine while asleep, the problems are just during the day.<br />
 He is already taking some Remeron for depression since years and wonders if this has something to do with his symptoms. The doctor said that since he is male and obese that he these two risk factors alone should be monitored. However, a heart or problem would cause him to breath deep and rapid and not shallow.</p>
<p> At his age it is also not too likely to have clogged arteries already that are dangerous already. He advised Brad to make an echocardiogram if he is really worried. This cost about thousand Dollars. The doctor said that the symptoms Brad described could come from simply overbreathing. Exhaling carbon dioxide too fast makes the blood alkaline and the nerves tingle.</p>
<p> Since Brad is taking medication for depression anxiety the doctor he told Brad to watch his thoughts and count his breaths per minute to find out if he is just overbreathing.</p>
