Im 41 and recently had a fever come out of nowhere, had a temperature of 103.8 for three days and took myself dutily off to the doctors. My blood pressure had also dropped 30-40 points below my normal levels to 88/55. All my joints ached liked crazy and bizarrely was having great difficulty sleeping.
5 weeks and four sets of antibiotics later Im almost back to normal. It took three weeks to get my temperature back to normal and a further week or so for my blood pressure/appetite/fluid balance to normalise.
Week 5 sees me capable of going a whole 9 hours without having to have a serious nap. (Err pass out for 2-3 hours)
My doctors are very happy with my progress and when I ask how long til Im better, they nod and bow and say a couple of weeks.
wtf?
How usual is it for antibiotics not to work because the doctors have admitted they didnt
Why cant they put a name to the infection?
Five weeks and Im still not well doesnt seem right. Any similar experiences?
No cough or any other physical symptoms. They are calling it a FUO too! Sounds generally very similar.
The last couple of weeks have been occupied in fending off opportunistic infections….Staph aureus, strep throat, systemic candidiasis and a jaw infection of unknown origin. They have concentrated on building the immune system and Im on a strict food regime to include mostly fresh fruit/veg. No prepackaged food, as little refined sugar as possible, high levels of fluids, as few OTC medicine/supplements/artificial chemicals as possible. (Food label reading has been an education believe me!)
Im a very energetic person and have not been floored like this without having a good reason which is very frustrating especially when the doctors seem so genuinely pleased with the progress!
103.8 is a very high fever for adults. Fevers are caused by viral or bacterial infections.
If you had a viral infection, the antibiotics would have been useless. However, many infections that start out as viral can turn into a bacerial infection.
I had a similiar incident about 10 years ago. However, I was hospitalized. My temp was 105. It was FUO (Fever of Unknown origin).
It sort of sounds like what you had since you said that they didn’t know what the infection was.
A high temp is an insult to the body. It takes all your reserves to make the anti-bodies to fight off the infection.
You are getting better. It’s going to take time (as your docs have sort of indicated). Your immune system is trying to re-build itself. Get plenty of sleep, eat healthy and take vitamins.
It may take a good 2-3 months (total) before you are feeling back to yourself. You may also find that you might be more suspetible to catching colds or other infections.
I know it took me nearly a year to fight off colds, stomach viruses and everything else out there.
Did you have any symptoms such as a cough or pain anywhere?

sounds like you need to follow up with your doctors.

Much too long 2 weeks should be long enough for an infection with antibiotics. I would see another Dr.
