My Grandmother had surgery on her back in February and afterwards she developed high blood pressure, which she still has. She did not have it before. Is this normal?
Yes it can provoke high blood pressure, after surgery or during surgery. Multiple hypothesis are there, they all believe in sensitivity to anesthetic drugs.
It is abnormal.
Could anesthesia cause high blood pressure after surgery? Even if you never had it before?

unknown to many people, is that anesthesia is the most dangerous part of any operation. It’s the usual cause of most post-op issues. It could very well be related to the surgery itself, she should definitely consult a doctor. The surgery may have irritated a pre-existing condition as well. but she should DEFINITELY see a doctor!

In a nutshell….no. A single round of anesthesia will not CAUSE hypertension (high blood pressure) to anyone.
What is much more likely, is that your grandmother may have had a marked elevation of blood pressure that was noted during or after her surgery on routine follow-ups. There may also be the likelihood that she had not evaluated well for blood pressure for the past doctor visits (that is, if she sees a doctor on a regular basis for check-ups). Pain, stress, etc., related to surgery can cause a rise in blood pressure too.
I have patients all the time that come in after having not been checked in a couple of years, and they’ve finally crossed the line of hypertension. "I’ve never had it before," they will exclaim. Sometimes it’s a hard sell, but I try to explain to them that there’s a lot of risk factors, and that medication to treat them will help to reduce the risks of disease related to HTN.
Hope this helps.

No, that’s very unlikely.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) is more likely to occur from anesthesia.
Your mother might not of been monitoring her BP enough to know that she has hypertension (high blood pressure) as it might not of been high when it was evaluated in a medical office/hospital.
Take them for about 1 week 3 times a day and present them to her local doctor.
Have a good one!
