Sodium and Potassium Imbalance Can Cause Hypertension

People develop hypertension or high-blood pressure for several reasons. It may be in the genes or due to a kidney disorder as well as stress related factors. The most common causes however are due to dietary intakes that result to excessive salt in our body. Excessive salt intakes will result to an imbalance between sodium and potassium that causes hypertension in our body.

Excessive salt is quite easy to understand, but as to how sodium and potassium imbalance causes hypertension seems a bit more complicated.

How Sodium and Potassium Imbalance Causes Hypertension

Sodium and potassium are two important electrolyte nutrients that the body uses for proper nerve functions, energy production, cell renewal, and many other bodily functions.

Salt, whose chemical composition is sodium chloride, is the main source of sodium. It is broken down as sodium and chloride during the body’s metabolic processes. Water that is not distilled also contains salt hence; water is also a source of sodium and chloride ions.

Our body cells are said to contain fluids composed of several minerals, which includes sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. As studies in science have already determined, there must be a proper balance between the sodium and potassium minerals contained in every cell, for the body cells to function properly.

Some of the important cell functions attributed to sodium and potassium balance are:

• The production of acid and digestive enzymes used to break down food to provide energy for the body;

• To enable the nerves to react in terms of impulse reactions to external factors such as heat, cold, or pain felt by the body;

• To enable the heart or cardiovascular system to function properly;

Any deficiency in sodium or potassium does not result to life threatening issues, but any serious distortion or disproportion with the amount of potassium as against sodium, creates complications often resulting to heart attacks.

Imbalance results not out of potassium or sodium deficiency but mostly due to excessive sodium. Potassium deficiency on the other hand may arise from unhealthy fad diets.

When there is too much sodium in the body fluids, the kidney takes on its natural role of excreting unused or unwanted substances like sodium. However, if the amount of sodium being excreted by the kidney is beyond the kidney’s normal capacity, the problem will now arise.

Near the kidney is a vascular system or fluid carrying vessels which carry the excessive sodium and will constrict or close itself to blood flow if the kidney is slow in taking out the sodium it carries. The vascular system closes in order to increase the blood pressure near the kidney, which creates a push or force that will prod the kidney to remove the excess sodium.

Although this is a natural process, it is not a normal occurrence and may cause blood pressure to rise at a dangerous level if it will not be addressed in due time. It can be remedied by increasing fluid intakes so the kidney can have enough water to excrete sodium. The sodium excretion may have been resolved but there is now the elevated blood pressure that needs to be dealt with.

The matter of controlling elevated blood pressure on the other hand can be remedied by using diuretic methods. The kidney took in a lot of water in order to excrete the sodium out of the system. To aid the kidney in producing more urine, a diuretic substance that can induce the kidney to produce more urine will be recommended by the doctor.

However, diuretics may also cause the kidney to excrete potassium, hence the doctor will also prescribe a potassium supplement to avoid the possible occurrence of sodium to potassium imbalance.

Thus, the body can naturally control blood pressure by drinking more water and taking in dietary substances that can promote the process of diuretics and take care of replenishing lost potassium. This then prevents sodium and potassium imbalance that can cause hypertension.

What Causes High Blood Pressure, Symptoms and Treatment

High blood pressure is a serious condition that affects one in four adults. High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. It is the force of blood against the walls of arteries. It makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body and causes the hardening of the arteries. Normal blood pressure is less than 130/85. High blood pressure is higher than 140/90. Hypertension is between 120/80 and 140/90.

Causes of High Blood Pressure

Studies show many different kinds of secondary high blood pressure where the primary causes may be quite different from the continuing causes. An example is a rare disease known as coarctation of the aorta, a disease of the large artery carrying blood out of the heart. In this condition, the aorta is tightly constricted a few inches beyond its origin and then expands to its normal diameter. Undoubtedly, blood pressure must rise above the constriction and fall below it, just as it does when one compresses a hosepipe. Yet, if this constriction is removed surgically and the normal continuity of the aorta is restored, blood pressure usually takes several years to fall to normal level. The initial case of high blood pressure is the constriction, but the continuing cause is probably complex changes in circulating hormones, which function to maintain blood flow through the kidneys despite the obstruction, which may persist for a long time even after the obstruction, has gone.

Pressure in a hose can be regulated either by controlling the rate at which fluid passes through it or by widening it. Pressure inside your arteries can cause the muscles that line the walls of the arteries to thicken. Your blood pressure is at its highest when the heart beats, pumping the blood. When the heart is at rest, between beats, your blood pressure falls. Still, for most of your waking hours, your blood pressure stays pretty much the same when you are sitting or standing still.

The last cause is one in which you have absolutely no control over. It is genetics. On its own, genetics doesn’t cause high blood pressure, but it feeds all the other causes. Think of it as fertilizer so to speak. If you have a family history of high blood pressure, then your very prone to getting it yourself. With the right genes you can have a high fat and sodium diet, never exercise, drink tons of coffee and stress out on a daily basis, yet still have a reasonably low blood pressure. With the wrong genes, even a little too much salt may be enough to kick your blood pressure into a dangerous range.

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure has no symptoms. But if you feel a dull ache in the back of your head when you wake up one morning, or you have few more nosebleeds than normal, you could have a high blood pressure. Headaches, nosebleeds, and dizziness are also common warning signs and symptoms of high blood pressure, but these do not occur until high blood pressure has reached a more advanced stage. However, many people even with the highest blood pressure readings do not feel any of these symptoms.

Palpitations, tension headaches and hyperventilation are symptoms of anxiety and so are common in people who are anxious or frightened. If they already have these symptoms and are then unfortunately found to have high blood pressure, then the diagnosis may confirm their fears and reinforce the symptoms. Others may get palpitations for the first time after they have been told that they have high blood pressure. They are not caused by high blood pressure itself, but by fear of it and what the diagnosis means. The symptoms usually disappear, although not always immediately, with adequate explanation of what a diagnosis of high blood pressure really means.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is considered a modern day disease that can lead to heart disease and stroke. As soon as symptoms are apparent, the proper treatment should be sought immediately. Hypertension, if left untreated, can cause the heart to enlarge due to the increased force necessary to pump blood against the greater resistance in your vessels. It is often called “the silent killer”. It affects nearly 50 million Americans

High Blood Pressure Treatment

Complimentary Therapies – Right medication will curb the level of blood pressure. Living a life with the right practice and involvement will help you to get better relief. It is advisable to join any meditation group or even you can buy books that teach you meditation. In spite of increasing the level of blood pressure, meditation will put an end to the trouble. Moreover, meditation will make your mind to achieve balance pose and position.

Acupuncture combined with electric stimulation or electro-acupuncture can lower elevations of blood pressure in human beings. When the research was conducted for the first time, acupuncture needles were inserted on the inside of the forearm just above the wrist, but to no avail. Researchers then started adding electric stimulation to the needles, which means that electric would start flowing from the needles to the body.

I am a 19 yr old female, I am 5’3 and weigh 119 pounds. I follow a meal plan by a dietitian and go to the gym 3 times a week. Yesterday at the doctor they informed me that I am “pre hypertension”. What in the world can cause this? I do not take any medications, and I don’t smoke either. I do have an eating disorder, but I have had it for 7+ years and blood pressure has never been a problem before.
Also my pulse was only 60

Best answer:

Answer by N
Causes of hypertension are not always known. It can be hereditary, due to hormones and other medical conditions. It is more likely that you were nervous when you were at the doctor’s office and your blood pressure was a little high due to anxiety.

Determining Your Causes Of High Blood Pressure

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure it’s likely that you suddenly have many questions. Understanding how blood pressure, left untreated, can negatively impact your body is first and foremost. Grasping the enormity of the lifestyle changes you may have to make can be overwhelming. But across the board, those who suffer from this condition want to know and understand the causes of high blood pressure.

Everyone is different; and for that reason there is no one answer when it comes to the causes of high blood pressure. For many, the causes of high blood pressure relates to their poor diet and exercise habits; that is why many doctors when encountering high blood pressure in their patients will first recommend a strident lifestyle program to attempt to lower blood pressure.

Patients – in an effort to determine if food and exercise are their causes of high blood pressure – will be directed to immediately eliminate foods with high salt, fat, and excessive preservatives while increasing water intake, natural, whole foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, and integrating daily exercise into their life. If a consistent program of healthy diet and exercise does not affect any changes, then other causes of high blood pressure will be examined.

Excessive alcohol and caffeine intake and the use of nicotine products can also be causes of high blood pressure. The immediate elimination of nicotine and significantly decreasing alcohol and caffeine consumption has been shown to have a positive effect on high blood pressure.

High levels of stress are another one of the causes of high blood pressure. In today’s chaotic world, stress can hardly be avoided. But learning to appropriately manage stress through exercise, meditation, and downtime can impact stress levels and help lower blood pressure.

Unfortunately, one of the more common causes of high blood pressure is simple genetic predisposition. When one or more family members suffer from high blood pressure than you are also likely to battle it as well. If a variety of lifestyle changes fails to determine your causes of high blood pressure than it’s likely that you are dealing with genetics. In this case, your doctor may prescribe daily medication designed to lower blood pressure.

Ultimately, the causes of high blood pressure are not as important as the successful ways in which we can manage it. Work with your health care provider to determine what works best for you in lowering your blood pressure. With consistent treatment – no matter what it is – those with high blood pressure can live a long and healthy life.

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

Particularly, there is no cause of high blood pressure. But, there are some factors which may affect or related to high blood pressure. Likewise, the symptoms of high blood pressure are hard to identify. This is really a silent disease and a silent killer.

These are some of the causes of high blood pressure:

Family history- High blood pressure usually runs in the families. If family members have high blood pressure, the rest of the members might have high blood pressure also. Age factor- When a person gets older, the more he is at risk of high blood pressure. Alcohol consumption- Too much alcohol in the body can increase the rate of heart disease over the time. Anxiety- This can lift up the blood pressure. Potassium intake- There should be enough potassium intakes, not lower and not higher too. Because if potassium level is too low, there would be high sodium in the cells. Too much sodium- In can produce fluid preservation and high blood pressure. This is the reason why sodium and potassium work hand in hand. They balance one another. Cigarette smoking- People who smoke usually have heart disease. This is because the chemicals present in the tobacco damages the artery walls. Action- A person who lacks physical activities be likely to increase heart rate. It will push the heart to exert or function more with each contraction. Obesity- There would be more pressure on the artery walls if there is a greater body mass. The reason for this is because higher blood is created to provide oxygen and nutrients toward tissues in the body.

Those are some factors that cause high blood pressure. High blood pressure can also be caused by some health conditions fundamental in your history. These medical conditions are kidney disease, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, hormonal disorders and use of contraceptives and licorice. If you have these, your high blood pressure is called secondary hypertension. On the other hand, if the cause is unknown, it is called primary hypertension.

How high blood pressure does affect your body?
Usually, high blood pressure include to the workload of your heart and arteries. Because of this your heart should pump harder thus making the arteries to carry blood under a greater pressure. Your heart and arteries will stop working properly if high blood pressure persists for a long time. There would be an increase risk of stroke, kidney failure and heart attack. To those people who are obese, tobacco user, and those who have high blood cholesterol or high blood diabetes have higher risk of stroke.

Blood pressure less than 120/80 mm Hg is the ideal blood pressure but a level that is higher than this increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

High Blood Pressure in America has reached rampant proportions, with a disturbing 33% of people in almost every civilized nation impacted by this medical condition. Even though the causes of high blood pressure are fairly well understood, the statistics show that knowledge alone is not enough.

It certainly is cause for alarm since less than half of individuals with the disorder have it under control. The importance of the situation is clear when we see the devastating effect it is having on the population due to mortality rates from heart disease, apoplexy, kidney failure, and other similar diseases. So, it is vital for everyone to not only learn about the causes of hypertension and high blood pressure, but to learn to appreciate the risk even at a young age.

There are two types of hypertension. “Essential Hypertension” can be triggered by lifestyle, diet, and environment; while “Secondary Hypertension has no known remedy and is indirectly caused by underlying “secondary” causes, such as kidney disease, pregnancy, genetics, and glandular disorders.

Let’s have a peek at a few of the distinctive things that are known to be causes of high blood pressure:

Lifestyle: Stress is a primary cause of high blood pressure. It can trigger both essential and secondary types of hypertension. If you live an exceptionally frenzied lifestyle where you are continually placed under personal and professional pressure, you could potentially be afflicted by this disease in the near future.

The body unleashes various hormones together with adrenaline into the body as a defense mechanism when the brain detects danger, and it can set off constriction of the blood vessels. Since blood needs to be dispatched sooner to the organs to deal with a fight or flight situation, your circulatory system increases blood pressure. However, frequent stress leads to a continual elevated blood pressure that can swiftly turn into a dysfunction. Combine this with some poor dieting habits and insufficient sleep and the condition becomes compounded significantly.

Obesity: One of the most typical and commonly understood causes of high blood pressure is extra weight, especially around the midriff. Consuming excessive amounts of sodium, sugar, and trans-fats on a daily basis can cause obesity. This will also increase the burden on the heart to pump blood to the additional inches on your body which will inevitably require elevating the pressure flowing through the blood vessels.

Immobility: Consistent physical activity not only helps you to control your weight gain and prevent excess weight, but it also helps to mitigate the results of stress and anxiety on your body. With every modern convenience at our fingertips, it could be difficult to get sufficient exercise during our normal day to day activities. So long as we decide to take the escalators instead of the stairs, or the automobile rather than walking, we shall surely deny ourselves of much needed physical exercise, because most people don’t have time and money to devote to joining a gym or health club.

Heredity and genes: Hereditary aspects also rank right up there on the list of causes for secondary hypertension. If either one of a pair of parents have had high blood pressure, the chances of their offspring coming down with the condition are greatly higher. If an unhealthy environment is thrown into the equation, it can magnify the underlying secondary condition. The kids of the mother or father who are afflicted by the dysfunction may even develop high blood pressure while still in their twenties and end up with full blown hypertension while still young adults.

Glandular dysfunctions: Glandular problems and auto immune conditions including hyperthyroidism and diabetes can also be attributed to secondary hypertension and other coronary problems. If any health conditions are detected early on which could be conducive to developing secondary hypertension, lifestyle choices should be made carefully to avoid igniting the potentially combustible situation.
Drinking: There have been many statements about alcohol being good for the heart taken out of context. Despite the apparent “good news” about alcohol’s heart benefits, it is in fact a direct cause of high blood pressure. Any benefits that can come from alcohol are due to very small amounts consumed by non-drinkers. But the brain, heart, and liver, are all directly affected by alcohol, which then affects the nervous and circulatory systems. Alcoholic beverages also contain excessive calories and could cause significant weight gain, which might bring about high blood pressure.

Sodium: It is an undisputable reality that the excessive use of salt is one of the top causes of high blood pressure. Most Americans tend not to take their salt ingestion seriously, and just like the majority of dietary ingredients, tastefulness is used as a guide. Nonetheless, in most cases people will far exceed the recommended allowance of 3000mls, albeit unintentionally. Sodium in addition to supplementary salts including potassium is responsible for the fluid retention in the body. Excessive sodium contributes to higher fluid volume which multiplies the strain on the kidneys and heart.

The good news about high blood pressure and essential hypertension is that they are manageable by simply adjusting our environment, lifestyle, and diet. Being that high blood pressure might cause innumerable health concerns, it would be a good idea to take steps early on to stop the situation from progressing.

In normal course of blood flow, the heart received impure blood in its right atrium and sends it to the right ventricle which further sends it to the lungs for purification. The purified blood from the lungs is sent back to the left entrance hall of the heart which passes it to the left ventricle.

Acid Reflux Food Tips For Controlling Heartburn

Heartburn and acid reflux are to a large extent the result of what kind of diets we adhere to. This becomes obvious when you consider the fact that healthy digestion is due to proper levels of stomach acid. A diet composed of good acid reflux food can limit the amount of these acids, thereby reducing the possibility of reflux. When the stomach acids become increased, they have a greater chance of disabling the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which normally keeps the stomach contents in place.

The human heart is highly vulnerable and heart disease is the most common cause of death in the Western World. Hypertension or high blood pressure can either be inherited or as in most cases it has no unknown cause. What is more perplexing is that is symptomless, it is only detected during regular blood pressure check ups.

What causes hypertension? Hypertension is brought about by poor diet, excessive smoking habits, obesity, diabetes, high alcohol intake and lack of exercise. The damage caused to the heart and other internal organs are heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and damage to the eyes. Headaches, nose bleeding and heavy bleeding such as heavy menstrual bleeding are symptoms of high blood pressure. If you have experienced any of these, then it is wise to get your blood pressure checked up.

What are the natural remedies for treating hypertension?

The good news is that hypertension can be treated and it can also be prevented. Losing weight, stopping smoking, a low-salt diet and a diet rich in vitamin C, garlic, potassium and omega 3 fatty acids can not only reduce your blood pressure significantly, it can also prevent it. These are just some of the natural methods of treating hypertension.

What are the prescribed drugs for treating high blood pressure?

There are various medications that can be prescribed such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors and calcium antagonists – however these should only be undertaken if you have very serious hypertensive heart disease, as most of these drugs have negative side effects which in most cases brings about new problems from gout right down to fatigue and nausea.

If you are already on some of these drugs and they are not working or the side effects are causing you bigger health problems, know that there is another alternative. Hypertension can be reversed in over 90% of cases by making a few simple lifestyle adjustments that includes diet, exercise and stress management. Thousands of people are choosing the natural cure because there are no negative side affects only positive which is increased energy, weight loss and a longer and healthier life.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure is a common but very serious medical condition that many people suffer from, often without even knowing about it. Since there are not always symptoms, it’s a good idea to have your blood pressure checked regularly to make sure it’s within a normal range. High blood pressure can have many causes, and we will be discussing some of these in this article.

Hypertension has been known to be caused by untreated adrenal and thyroid conditions. Hypertension can be caused as a result of a faulty thyroid or condition referred to as hypothyroidism wherein the thyroid isn’t producing the right amount of hormones. If you are experiencing an adrenal gland condition it can be a cause of high blood pressure. The symptoms most related to thyroid issues or adrenal issues are fatigue, sudden weight gain, and joint pain. People often live with these conditions for a long time without realizing it, as they can only be detected by medical tests. Prescription medication is often the only treatment. Some families doom their offspring with high blood pressure via genetics. You need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of hypertension especially if your parents had it. You need to know if your family has a history of diabetes and heart disease as well. If you want to control your blood pressure it’s important to take control of the factors you have control over such as lifestyle. The idea here is that while genetics may play a role in high blood pressure it’s a good idea to pay close attention to your disposition to it.

Even experts don’t agree about the exact causes of high blood pressure, and very often the cause can’t be identified. Doctors diagnose most cases of high blood pressure as essential hypertension, meaning there is not a specific cause that is known.

While no one specific cause can be found when it comes to essential hypertension, there are many risk factors that can make this problem more likely. Since the causes are hard to pinpoint, you have to have your blood pressure checked to know if it’s high. There are many changes you can make to lower your risk, and ways to treat it when it’s been diagnosed, but doctors are still doing research on the exact cause of high blood pressure.

Your medical and family history, exercise habits and diet can all be contributing factors when it comes to hypertension. If you have high blood pressure, your doctor can help you identify any risk factors so you can make the necessary changes. The causes of high blood pressure, such as the ones we’ve been discussing, can be either obvious or hard to see, but in all cases you can find a way to lower it. Fortunately, you can always make healthy changes that will lower your blood pressure, no matter what the cause.

Every individual is special. Some medicines will for some, and for others won’t. Your medical doctor will carry out many checks to come across the proper medicines for high blood pressure which are right for you personally.

1. Your high blood pressure medicines always depend inside your age and ethnicity. If a person is under the age of 55 and isn’t originated in the Africa or Carribean, the physician might prescribe an angiotensin receptor blocker or an ACE inhibitor. If a person is 55 a long time aged or older, and has originated from Africa or in the Carribean, the physician may prescribe thiazide diuretics or calcium channel blockers.

2. If you obtain the previously mentioned hypertension medicines are not working, your physician might prescribe other medications collectively with your existing drug regimen. It implies that: (1) if you have angiotensin receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors as your present high blood pressure medicines, your doctor may possibly prescribe calcium-channel blockers as drug combos together with your current regimen, and (2) if you’re at present taking thiazide diuretics or calcium channel blockers, your physician could prescribe you to get ACE inhibitors.

3. For those who require getting 3 drug mixtures, it must be an ACE inhibitor, a thiazide diuretic along with a calcium channel blocker.

4. There are cases wherein 3-drug combinations of medicines for high blood pressure are still not enough to control high blood pressure levels. In these cases, the doctor may give other kinds of medicines and you may also be referred to a specialist.

Question by Jerith N: What’s causing my head “pressure”?
The pressure/pain started 4 days ago, I did’nt really pay attention to it at first. I never get headaches, and when I do they want last more than 5 minutes. The pressure is in both temples (mostly the right) and radiates down into my jaw occasionally. I’t does not go away with any type of over the counter meds that I’ve tried. I have no other symptoms with the pressure. I’t has becoming extremely irritating and I find myself constantly concerned with it.
Today it got so intense I had and anxiety attack and went to the emergency room. My blood pressure was 184/96, and my heart rate was up to 114. I definitely attribute the high numbers to my state of panic. Two hours after arriving and not being seen I left, however, I was feeling much better.
The pressure is still here. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
Im a 25 year old semi-active male. I’m 5’8 and 148 pounds. I do not smoke and only drink (moderately) 1-2 nights out of the week.
