Understanding Caffeine And High Blood Pressure

How many of us can get through a morning without our ritual cup – or cups – of coffee? For those of us addicted to caffeine a day without it can be a long and slow grind. But, as the millions of people who suffer from hypertension know, caffeine and high blood pressure do not mix.

To understand the correlation between caffeine and high blood pressure you must first understand the basics of high blood pressure. High blood pressure occurs when the arteries are constricted – through a variety of factors including poor diet, physical inactivity, genetics, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption – and blood flow is slowed. Therefore, the heart is required to pump harder to get the blood where it needs to go. This puts an enormous stress on the heart; high blood pressure that is left untreated can result in heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and a number of other conditions.

Caffeine elevates heart rate also causing the heart to pump harder thus exacerbating high blood pressure. For this reason caffeine and high blood pressure is not a good match.

Because caffeine is not limited to coffee, it can be tricky to eliminate it altogether from your diet. High levels of caffeine can also be found in tea, soft drinks, chocolate, and some medications. And for those of us with a full-blown caffeine addiction, eliminating it can be unfathomable. Luckily, when it comes to caffeine and high blood pressure, most health care professionals agree that it is not necessary to completely eliminate caffeine; simply reducing caffeine intake can be enough to lower blood pressure.

Work with your doctor to learn how to best approach caffeine and high blood pressure. You doctor can help you strategize ways to limit caffeine while still enjoying those things you love. Perhaps one cup of caffeinated coffee in the morning – followed by only decaffeinated beverages for the rest of the day – is enough of a lifestyle change to impact your blood pressure.

Tackling caffeine and high blood pressure is only one of the ways to successfully manage hypertension. Do your research, be proactive, and continue medical treatment; you’ll be surprised to find you have more control than you think.

Understanding Heart Disease

Most people struggle with cholesterol and heart health because they do not understand the dynamics that cause heart problems, or result in a healthy heart. The mix is corrupted by the fact that age, diet, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, physical activity, and disease has a dynamic impact on the heart’s health.

Blood is alive. It needs to be fed and nurtured. Healthy blood promotes a healthy body, and a healthy heart.

The heart is pump located in the chest blood is depleted of oxygen while circulating through the body. Then the blood flows into the right ventricle, which pumps the blood out to the lungs for oxygenation.

Pressure is created when the heart contracts. To work right, the heart muscle needs to be healthy, and the arteries clear enough to accept the oxygenated blood.

The heart is nourished by the blood supplied to the heart through the coronary arteries. So, in fact, the strength of the heart depends on the blood supply.

A healthy heart has elastic coronary arteries that are flexible. The inner lining of the artery is smooth. This allows the blood to flow without clotting.

Almost 1.5 million Americans have a heart attack each year, or that is 1 heart attack every 20 seconds, with a 1/3 fatality rate. Currently, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the USA.

Understanding the importance of blood is the first step in understanding how to prevent a diseased heart. Once you understand that blood is alive then it is possible to establish a heart attack prevention program.

Heart attack prevention starts by monitoring and modifying certain risk factors. These risk factors are interrelated – there is no one stand alone risk factor. This is where people run into problems. They treat one risk factor, or one symptom, and leave the rest of their system. The entire system is co-dependent on each other. If the blood is not healthy, the heart will not be healthy. If the heart muscle is not healthy, blood pressure will have a detrimental effect on the heart and arteries.

Each of us may have one or more risk factors. If we make moderate change in one area of life, we may reduce other risk factors at the same time.

The most misunderstood aspect of heart health is believing that exercise and diet automatically equals a healthy heart. This is not true. In some cases, a healthy diet will not correct high cholesterol. Exercise will not improve the effectiveness of a weak heart.

This is why drugs and doctors are needed. Heart health is a partnership between the doctor and the patient. A doctor cannot single-handedly protect a patient from a heart attack. A patient cannot protect themselves without the assistance of a doctor.

In a very liberal way, a healthy heart depends on a collaboration between doctor and patient. A patient should consult their doctor before taking any supplements or changing their diet. This does not mean the patient must ask permission – instead, the patient should instigate educated conversations with their doctor.

Patients should take an active roll in their own health program if they want to enjoy a high quality of life right to the end – whenever that might be.

Kidney Problem Can Also Cause High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can be caused by a number of reasons. Most of the reasons are quite known and sound rather familiar. However, there are still others that are not as common. Among such uncommon blood pressure causes, one is kidney problem. In fact, kidneys have an important role to play in maintaining blood pressure.

It is a cause of worry when the flow of blood to one of the kidneys is somehow reduced. The kidneys, in response to this reduction in the blood flow, release a hormone called ‘angiotensin.’ This constricts the blood vessels and the blood pressure shoots up.

This kidney problem is better understood when the way angiotensin is made is understood. Produced by angiotensinogen, it is an alpha-2-globulin released by the liver, and around 453 amino acids go into its making.

When the blood pressure is low, renin produces angiotensin I, which turns into angiotensin II. It is the presence of angiotensin II that makes the blood pressure rise. Arteries constrict due to angiotensin II, besides blood clots are also promoted due to platelets aggression, which promotes blood clots.

Angiotensin II is also responsible for increase in kidneys’ sodium absorption. This further worsens the blood pressure condition. It is basically an attempt on body’s part to increase the blood flow to kidney. And when the body succeeds, which it makes sure it does, you see your blood pressure reading skyrocket.

Apart from the above-mentioned ailment, there is another kind of kidney problem leading to high blood pressure. This normally afflicts the younger people, like the teenagers. It is called renovascular hypertension. It is caused when the renal arteries leading to the kidneys get narrow naturally. The renin is, thus, released and the above-mentioned cycle leading to high blood pressure is set in motion.

That was the problem part. Coming to the solution part, we all tend to pin our hopes to medication and so when things start going wrong with our blood pressure we rush to the nearest chemist. That is not the right thing to do. It is the doctor that you must consult and take the medication only when he prescribes and only those that he asks you to take.

Labetalol to reduce high blood pressure during pregnancy?

Have any women taken this medication during pregnancy for chronic hyper tension? I started taking it today and I am curious about other experience with this drug. My dr. first prescribed me Methyldopa (aka Aldomet) which made me so sick, I couldn't function. Now I am taking Labetalol.

Labetalol is a very safe anti hypertension med to take while pregnant and breastfeeding, its very low dose. I have taken it with my pregnancies and am still on a low dose, no worries, my babies and I are fine. No serious side effects or anything, the biggest side effect you may feel you will have with any anti hyperttension med, you might feel a lil tired at first, but with anything call the DR if you have issues, but I didnt have a problem with it, its very safe, good luck!

Will twizzlers cause high blood pressure?

I know licorice can cause high blood pressure, but is there anything in twizzlers that will affect blood pressure?

Some people have reported this. Any thing with licorice or salt will increase your blood pressure. Try eating foods high in potassium to help lower your blood pressure.

High/Low Blood Pressure Symptoms?

I'm just REALLY curious as to what the symptoms of high and low blood pressure are.

If any of you know, could you please list them.

a lot of those things don't have symptoms, usually high blood pressure you find out when the doctor checks it. However, a result of high blood pressure would be heart disease. But blood pressure problems could also be noticed upon rising in the morning if you have a headache, or getting up from sitting or standing and your dizzy, also other circulatory conditions, like tingling in hands and feet however, this could also be neurological, etc..
