March 29th, 2009 — blood pressure normalized
I’ve considered making the switch for some time. My big personal health concern is my blood pressure is a little elevated (around 140/80 when I’m not taking my BP medicine). Will going vegetarian help me normalize this?
Well…I hate fast food, etc, so that's not a problem. I'm already fairly conscious of what I eat anyway, and I'm borderline vegetarian. I'm not one to eat potato chips, deep-fried junk, etc., so I'm just trying to evaluate my options.
As far as alcohol, there's mixed opinions on that as well. My doctor told me that drinking a little every day actually improves blood pressure slightly and improves HDL cholesterol. I'm a craft beer fan (I don't overdo it though) and I don't see that changing.
Not if you continue to eat badly, fried foods saturated fats etc… cut out the bbq and heavy picnic foods, ribs, brats, burgers. Try eating leaner meats chicken breast, either grilled or cooked with a light seasoning (no sauce) and some fresh food never hurts. If you drink cut that too (baby steps, I know).
Gong veg is a huge step and you should take small steps with this as well but the truth of the matter is if its fresh its not bad for you, fruit, salads, vegis are all wonderful so instead of the french fries order a salad (not macaroni with the heavy mayo).
Good luck!

March 29th, 2009 — blood pressure medication
I work with a lady who has had high blood pressure for years. Last week, she had, what they diagnosed as Bells Palsy – and per her on medication for her high blood pressure. Today our boss took her blood pressure and it is 160/100. I'd be running to a doctor – what do you think ?
How many days does the medication take to become effective ?
No medication always works. But generally it works for a large portion of those who use it.
160/100 is not life threatening. She needs to follow her dr's orders, continue her medication and follow up on treatment.
Medication is not a magic bullet, it takes time, tweaking, dietary and lifestyle changes to work optimally.

March 27th, 2009 — reducing high blood pressure
For the millions of people who suffer from high blood pressure, finding a way to successfully manage the condition is of paramount concern. Many begin with a strident diet and exercise program in which food with excessive salt, fat, and preservatives are all but eliminated along with nicotine, excessive alcohol, and caffeine. Instead, the diet is infused with natural, whole foods, and increased water. Additionally patients are asked to embark upon a daily regime of physical exercise.
If none of these lifestyle changes are enough to effectively lower blood pressure then often daily blood pressure medication is prescribed. Medication has shown great strides in significantly lowering blood pressure in patients who show a genetic predisposition for high blood pressure and for whom diet and exercise has not worked.
But another natural alternative for many has been herbs for high blood pressure. A variety of herbs found in local health food stores have been enormously affective in lowering blood pressure.
In short, herbs for high blood pressure actually work to dilate blood vessels allowing the blood to flow easily, thus reducing hypertension. Some herbs for high blood pressure – because of their calming agents – work to relax the cardiovascular system thus reducing blood pressure.
To get background information on any herbs for high blood pressure you can get online to find the latest research connecting herb intake to treat hypertension. Log in to chat forums with sufferers of high blood pressure; you’ll likely find several other people in a similar situation who have tried herbs for high blood pressure.
Self-administering herbs and leaving your blood pressure medically unchecked can only get you into further trouble. Consult your doctor before taking anything, including herbs for high blood pressure.
Doing your research, making lifestyle changes including herbs for high blood pressure, and working in tandem with your doctor will ensure you a lifetime of lowered blood pressure and healthy living.

March 27th, 2009 — high blood pressure symptom
A person with hypertension is often prescribed a diuretic for high blood pressure symptom relief. It is one of the most common as well as probably one of the cheapest treatments for treating high blood pressure.
Diuretics work by forcing the kidneys to discharge more sodium and water than normal in the urine. This reduces the water content in the blood and less water means that there is less pressure being placed on the walls of the arteries.
Often a diuretic will be used as the first line of treatment by a doctor for a patient suffering with high blood pressure. But they that will also usually recommend their patients also take other forms of medication as well in order to help control their high blood pressure.
There are three kinds of diuretics which are used in treating high blood pressure and these are as follows:-
1. Loop Diuretics
These particular diuretics are often prescribed to people who also suffer from heart or kidney problems or suffer from edema (swelling of the legs). However they will not usually be prescribed to people who are just suffering from high blood pressure. Generally a person will find that once they start taking loop diuretics their urine output increases for a few hours afterwards.
2. Potassium Sparing Diuretics
Unlike some of the other kinds of diuretics now available these particular ones do not cause a person’s potassium levels to drop. In fact in some cases a person who is taking this particular diuretic for high blood pressure will find their potassium levels increase.
3. Thiazide diuretic
A thiazide diuretic helps the body pass more water. It generally has quite a weak action on the kidneys, so the urine flow is not increased significantly when compared to loop diuretics. In addition to the impact on the kidneys they also cause a widening of blood vessels, which also helps reduce blood pressure.
There are a number of natural diuretics, including Dandelion that may also be a useful addition to the battle to reduce blood pressure, but before embarking taking any natural alternative solutions speak with your doctor.

It is important that anyone suffering with high blood pressure finds out what the true cause of the hypertension is. Diuretics and many medications only treat the symptoms of the condition, and without establishing the cause or causes and resolving that, then there is a greater risk of reoccurrence.
Review your lifestyle critically and see if there are any connections to the high blood pressure. Here are some things that have been found to elevate blood pressure over time:
A poor diet
Being obese
A lack of exercise
Smoking
Drinking alcohol, especially binge drinking
A history of heart problems of high blood pressure in the family.
Although the exact cause of high blood pressure has not been established, the conditions and habits above have been shown to elevate blood pressure.
There are also other conditions and circumstances that can elevate blood pressure including pregnancy, kidney or endocrine disease, blood vessels and arteries narrowing and medication like steroids and contraceptive pills.
While using a diuretic for high blood pressure relief can be effective, especially when used with other treatments, finding the underlying cause of the blood pressure and then introducing methods to resolve it can reduce the change of reoccurrence and keep you medication free.
